Not Pleading Guilty to a Speeding Ticket

Besides paying the municipality fines for a speeding ticket, there will be a surcharge charged to the driver from the state. If the driver has been assigned points to their license there are point surcharges of $100 for the first six points and then $25 for each additional point above six. If there are other tickets that were issued at the same time as the speeding ticket, they may have their own set of points and subsequent surcharges on top of the ones for the speeding ticket.

Failure to pay the surcharge means the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission will suspend the driver's driving privileges indefinitely. They will also file for a judgment in the amount owed, with the state Superior Court. Once driving privileges are revoked in the state of New Jersey, it can be difficult and time-consuming to get the issue resolved. Those that receive tickets within the state of New Jersey but live in a different state will still receive a surcharge bill from New Jersey as well. If someone living outside of the state fails to pay the surcharges, the driver's home state motor vehicle commission will be notified and may suspend the driver's license in that state.

Not only is there a cost associated with the fees and penalties to the municipality and the surcharge, there is a cost associated with insurance premiums. As a general rule, one point added to a license will add $150 to a yearly premium and a four-point ticket could add up to $2,000 to a yearly premium. Many who decide to just plead guilty and pay the ticket because they feel it will be the cheaper choice do not take into consideration these other costs associated with a nj speeding ticket. Having points on a license can prevent a driver from making a change to their insurance or from changing insurance companies for up to three years.
